01 / Why people hesitate

You have heard the stories. So have we.

Money wired to a contact who stopped replying. A container that arrived full of the wrong goods. A duty bill at Modjo that doubled the cost of the shipment. In Ethiopia these are not rare accidents — they are the normal risk of importing from China with nobody accountable at the other end. Melinova exists to remove that risk. Here is exactly how.

Risk 01

You pay, and then nothing arrives.

How we prevent it

You never send the full amount up front. Payment is released in stages tied to things you can verify for yourself: supplier confirmed, goods inspected and photographed, container loaded, cargo cleared. Each stage comes with the document that proves it happened.

Risk 02

The goods arrive, but they are not what you ordered.

How we prevent it

Our team physically visits the supplier before you commit — and we check whether it is an actual factory or a trader reselling someone else's work. Before anything is loaded we photograph and video the real goods, count them, and check the specification against your order. You approve from the evidence, not from a promise.

Risk 03

The duty bill is double what you planned for.

How we prevent it

We quote landed cost, not freight cost. Goods, freight, insurance, estimated customs duty, VAT and port handling — worked out and written down before you pay anything, with delivery to your address priced separately so you can see exactly what it costs. HS codes are checked in advance so the declared value and the duty rate hold no surprises at Modjo.

02 / How your money moves

You never send the full amount up front.

Every stage releases only when something you can verify has happened. Click a stage to see what you receive before you pay it — and what happens if we fail to deliver it.

03 / Check us before you trust us

Do not take our word for any of this.

A company that wants your money will tell you it is trustworthy. A company that deserves it will tell you how to check. Here is everything you need to verify that Melinova is a real, registered, findable business — using sources that have nothing to do with us.

    Founder & CEO · Guangzhou

Melat has served the Ethiopian market from the far end of it — in China, where the goods actually come from. More than six years on the ground: procurement, consultation, freight and customs, for businesses and individuals who could not be there themselves. She deals with the factories in Mandarin, not through an interpreter.

Restaurants you would know by name. Commercial businesses. Construction vehicles now working in Ethiopia. Those are a few of the sectors she has delivered for, start to finish, to the client's satisfaction.

She is the one who reads what you send.

    04 / What we do

One team, factory floor to your door.

Most importers stitch together a sourcing agent, a freight forwarder and a clearing agent — three companies who blame each other when something goes wrong. Melinova is all three, so there is only ever one number to call.

    05 / How it works

Seven steps, and you can check every one.

Nothing here happens behind a curtain. At every step there is a document, a photograph or a tracking number you can hold up and verify — and payment only moves forward when you are satisfied that the step is done.

    01

    Free consultation

Tell us what you want to import, roughly how much, and when you need it. We tell you honestly whether it makes commercial sense, what it will cost, and how long it will take. If it is a bad idea we will say so.
    You pay: nothing
    02

    Sourcing & landed-cost quote

We find or verify the supplier and put one written quote in front of you: goods, freight, insurance, estimated duty, VAT and port charges, cleared at Modjo. One number, with the workings shown — and delivery to your address priced separately underneath it, so you can take it or arrange your own.
    You pay: nothing
    03

    Written agreement

If you are happy, we sign an agreement that names the goods, the specification, the price, the timeline and what happens if either side fails to deliver. Then the deposit — enough to place the order, not the whole amount.
    You pay: deposit
    04

    Production & inspection

We stay on the factory while your order is produced and send progress updates. When it is finished our team inspects it in person and sends you photos and video of your actual goods. You approve before anything moves.
    You approve before loading
    05

    Loading & departure

Booking confirmed, container sealed, bill of lading issued. You receive the shipping documents and a tracking reference you can follow yourself — you are not depending on us to tell you where your cargo is.
    You pay: balance of freight
    06

    Customs & clearance

Djibouti transit, declaration, duty and VAT, and clearance at Modjo or Kality dry port. We handle the paperwork and the queue. Because the HS codes were agreed at quotation stage there is no argument about classification — and if the assessed value moves, you hear it from us before you pay it.
    You pay: duty at cost
    07

    Delivery to your address

Delivered to Modjo or Kality, or to your address in Addis Ababa, Adama, Hawassa, Bahir Dar or anywhere else in Ethiopia — an add-on service, quoted separately so you can take it or arrange your own. You check the goods against the inspection report you already have, and the final payment is due when the cargo is in your hands, not before.
You pay: final balance on receipt
    02 / 04

    Twenty-two days of open water.

From the moment the container is sealed in Guangzhou, you can follow it yourself — on the carrier's own tracking, with a reference we give you. You are not depending on us to tell you where your cargo is.

    06 / Routes & transit times

    How long it actually takes.

These are working ranges from the factory door in China to Modjo or Kality, including customs — add the delivery leg if you want it brought to your address. Anyone who promises you a fixed date months in advance is guessing. We give you a range, then update it with real dates as the shipment moves.

Mode Origin Route Door-to-door Best for
Sea — FCL Guangzhou · Shenzhen · Ningbo · Shanghai Djibouti → Modjo → Addis 35–50 days Full containers. Lowest cost per unit.
Sea — LCL Guangzhou · Yiwu · Shenzhen Djibouti → Modjo → Addis 40–55 days Smaller volumes. Share a container, share the cost.
Air Guangzhou · Shenzhen Direct → Addis Ababa Bole 5–10 days Urgent stock, spare parts, samples, high value.
Air express Guangzhou · Shenzhen Courier → Addis Ababa 3–7 days Documents and small parcels under 50 kg.

Note — indicative ranges only, based on typical China–Djibouti–Ethiopia sailings and clearance. Confirm your own real figures before publishing. Actual transit depends on sailing schedule, port congestion, customs inspection and season.

    03 / 04

Djibouti, then the dry port at Modjo or Kality.

Where most shipments stall. Transit paperwork, the ERCA declaration, duty assessed on a value that was agreed weeks earlier. We handle the queue, and because the HS codes were settled at quotation stage there is no argument about classification — and if the assessed value moves, you hear it from us before you pay it.

07 / Work it out yourself

Three tools. No sign-up, no email.

Before you talk to anyone, know your own numbers. Work out how much space your cargo actually takes, what an airline will charge you for, and whether a container makes sense. Then check where a shipment is. Nothing here asks for your details.

Length cm Width cm Height cm Cartons Weight per carton kg

Measure the outside of the carton, not the product. If your cartons are different sizes, add a row for each size — that is what a forwarder needs to quote you accurately.

    Total volume0.000 CBM
    Total gross weight0 kg
    Total cartons0
    Air chargeable weight0 kg
    Sea LCL revenue tons0.000
    What this means
Enter your carton dimensions to see what shipping mode fits.
Get a quote for these numbers

How this is calculated — Volume is length × width × height ÷ 1,000,000 per carton. Airlines charge on whichever is greater: actual weight, or volumetric weight (L × W × H ÷ 6,000). Sea LCL is charged per revenue ton: whichever is greater, cubic metres or metric tonnes. These are the standard industry formulas, not our own; any honest forwarder will arrive at the same numbers.

    08 / Why Melinova

We are in China. That is the whole point.

An import agent sitting in Addis is one more message in a chain. When your order goes wrong they forward your complaint to a contact they have never met. We are a taxi ride from the factory.

On the ground, not on the phone

Our team lives and works in Guangzhou. We walk into the factory, meet the owner, look at the machines and count the cartons ourselves. Problems get solved in person, in Chinese, on the same day.

    Your money moves in steps

Nobody should wire the full value of a container to a stranger overseas. Payment is split across the job and released against proof — supplier confirmed, goods inspected, container loaded, cargo delivered. If we stop performing, you stop paying.

    Everything in writing

Quotation, agreement, inspection report, packing list, bill of lading, customs declaration, delivery note. You keep a copy of every one. If we ever disagree about what was promised, the paper decides it, not the argument.

    Amharic, when it matters

Freight goes wrong in the details, and details get lost in a second language. Talk to us in Amharic about specification, duty and payment terms, and we will translate it into Chinese at the factory ourselves.

09 / Questions people actually ask

    The awkward questions, answered.

How do I know you will not take my money and disappear?
You do not have to take our word for it, and you should not. Three things protect you. First, you never send the full amount — payment is split into milestones released against proof you can see. Second, we are a registered company in China with a licence number, a fixed address and directors you can look up. Third, start small. Send us one modest order, watch how we handle it, and scale up only when we have earned it. Any serious partner should be willing to be tested.
Can you help with the bank permit and foreign currency side?
For most Ethiopian importers the hardest part is not the shipping — it is the import permit and the foreign currency. Since the July 2024 float your bank issues the permit directly, for any value. But the queue did not disappear, it moved: the IMF put bank FX backlogs at around USD 1.4 billion as of April 2026. We prepare the proforma, contract and supporting documents your bank needs in the format they expect, and we work to your bank's timeline. We cannot allocate foreign currency for you and we will never claim otherwise. One warning: franco valuta was closed to most traders by directive FVD/01/2026 on 29 May 2026 — if anyone has told you otherwise, check before you commit money.
    What is the minimum order?
[SET YOUR REAL MINIMUM HERE.] There is no minimum for a consultation or a quotation. For shipping, LCL means you can move as little as one cubic metre, so you do not need a full container to start. Many of our customers begin with a single test order before committing to volume — we encourage it.
What happens if the goods arrive damaged or short?
This is exactly why the pre-shipment inspection report matters. Because we photographed and counted your goods before loading, we can prove the condition they left China in — which decides whether it is a supplier problem, a handling problem or an insurance claim. We recommend cargo insurance on every shipment; it is a small percentage of value and we arrange it with the booking. If something is wrong, we open the claim and chase it, and we tell you what is realistically recoverable rather than what you want to hear.
    What can you not ship?
We do not handle counterfeit or brand-infringing goods, weapons or weapon parts, narcotics, ivory or wildlife products, or anything prohibited under Ethiopian import law or Chinese export law. Some categories — pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, telecoms equipment, vehicles — are legal but need permits and certificates before they can clear. Ask us early: it is far cheaper to find out at the quotation stage than at Modjo.
Do you only work with big importers?
No. A shop owner buying two pallets and a distributor buying six containers get the same process, the same documents and the same inspection. Small orders travel LCL or by air; large ones travel FCL. The difference is the freight cost per unit, not the level of care.
    How do you charge?
[STATE YOUR REAL FEE STRUCTURE HERE — commission percentage, flat service fee, or margin on freight. Being specific about this in public is itself a trust signal; vagueness about pricing is what people are afraid of.] Whatever the structure, it appears as a line on your quotation. You will not find a fee you were not shown.
    09 / What we know

    Everything we know, written down.

Five guides on the parts of this trade that actually cost people money. Every claim is sourced and dated, and where we could not verify something we say so — because in this subject a confident wrong answer is worse than no answer. Free, no sign-up, and yours whether you ever work with us or not.

    10 / Talk to us

    Free consultation. Real answers.

Tell us what you are trying to import. We will tell you what it costs, how long it takes, and whether it is worth doing. No charge, and no pressure to book anything afterwards.
